World Elder Abuse Awareness Day – June 15, 2013

globe-in-handsJune 15, 2013 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.  Each year, hundreds of thousands of seniors in the United States are neglected, abused and exploited at an estimated loss of $2.6 billion or more annually, funds that could have been used to pay for basic needs such as housing, food, and medical care. Abuse, exploitation, and neglect occur in every demographic, and can happen to anyone – a family member, a neighbor, a friend, even you.  It is estimated that only about one in five of these crimes are ever reported.

An article in the June 2013 edition of Senior Connections Magazine reported on a Las Vegas couple who were accused of scamming nearly $2 million from the elderly in California. Both defendants were involved in a scheme that targeted elderly residents in the San Diego, Calif. area from 2007 to the present. Michael Woodward would go door to door selling what he claimed was long term care insurance. To read the entire article please visit:
