PERSON – CENTERED CARE

The Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman advocates for the protection of the health, safety, welfare and rights of residents at facilities for long-term care. The Nevada Legislature recently enacted amendments to the law which requires the Ombudsman’s Office to develop a training course to be made available to long term care facilities to provide services to residents in a manner that allows them to follow their own routine and make decisions concerning the daily activities in which they participate.

The concept behind the recent change is knowns as “person-centered care”.  This approach aims to see the person with #dementia as an individual, rather than focusing on their illness or abilities they may have lost.  Most importantly, person-centered care means treating residents with dementia with dignity and respect.

If you believe your loved one is not receiving person-centered care, the Ombudsman’s Office is a great resource available to assist.
